We help our clients use and develop waste characterisation and assay systems by advising them on the need for adjustment, treatment or conditioning of waste. In addition, we assess its suitability for further handling, processing, storage or disposal.
We provide strategic and operational advice on waste categorisation, packaging and storage. This involves determining the treatment, packaging and storage techniques that best suit each type of waste.
Through waste minimisation techniques, UKAEA reduces radioactive waste generated during decommissioning. Our techniques include waste segregation and clearance from operational or redundant nuclear facilities, identification of exempt waste, and decontamination and segregation of intermediate-level waste.
We bring our in-depth experience and understanding of waste acceptance and control procedures to clients who want to develop waste matrices and obtain Letters of Compliance for waste packages from the UK industry body Nirex.
We have extensive experience in materials handling, treatment and storage for a diverse range of wastes, as well as the capacity to develop facilities for sites moving from operation to decommissioning.
