The course familiarises delegates with each step involved in producing a modern standard safety case, the potential problems and possible solutions. Consequently delegates will improve their ability to contribute to the successful delivery of Safety Cases to time, quality and cost constraints.

How did the course develop?

The Successful Nuclear Safety Case Production (SNSCP) course has evolved from UKAEA’s highly effective in-house Safety Case Writers’ Course, which over the last decade has been attended by more than 600 people, including staff, contractors, and other licensees.

The course draws on UKAEA’s extensive experience of producing modern standard safety cases for a wide range of nuclear/radiological facilities. This experience covers facilities across the full lifecycle – from new build, operations, care and maintenance through to decommissioning (including waste processing and storage).

The course presenters have proven safety case production experience. They deliver the course using a mixture of interactive presentations and syndicate exercises. The course notes include generic guidance on wide ranging aspects of safety case production.

What areas does the course cover?

  • The requirement for, and types of, modern standard facility safety case documentation – from concept to decommissioning
  • Strategies for staging/combining safety case documentation
  • The process involved in producing a Safety Case and key players (including safety case author, engineering-design function, end user, peers reviewers, safety committee members and regulators)
  • Planning safety cases – possible problems and solutions
  • Producing scopes of work for safety cases
  • Engineering substantiation for old and new facilities
  • Reconciliation of engineering substantiation with the safety assessment and the associated ALARP review
  • Assessing nuclear lifts in safety cases and making ALARP arguments for using existing cranes
  • Human factors and industrial safety
  • Categorisation of activities
  • Implementing safety cases and dealing with outstanding actions
  • Facility safety case periodic review

When does the course run?

The SNSCP course can be run on request to suit your location requirements. In addition, individuals can attend prearranged runs of the course. Please contact UKAEA for further information.
