The course familiarises delegates with each step involved in undertaking peer reviews, the potential problems and possible solutions. This enables delegates to make a stronger contribution to delivering robust peer reviews.

How did the course develop?

This course has evolved from UKAEA’s highly effective in-house Peer Reviewers Course, which over the last decade has been attended by more than 500 people, including staff, contractors, and other licensees.

The Peer Reviewers Course draws on UKAEA’s extensive experience of producing and peer reviewing modern standard safety cases for a wide range of nuclear/radiological facilities. This experience covers facilities across the full lifecycle – from new build, operations, care and maintenance to decommissioning (including waste processing and storage).

The course presenters have proven peer review experience. As well as interactive presentations, the course includes a peer review exercise. In addition, the course notes contain a copy of a generic guide to conducting peer reviews.

What areas does the course cover?

  • The purpose of peer review and regulatory requirements
  • The peer review process – from appointing appropriate peer reviewers to reporting on the review and resolving issues
  • Planning peer reviews – potential problem areas and how to avoid them
  • Who the peer reviewer needs to interact with
  • Benchmarks for reviewing safety case documentation, including sound engineering principles
  • Examples of good practice
  • Peer reviewing the category of modifications
  • Lessons learnt from a major accident

When does the course run?

The Peer Reviewers course can be run on request to suit your location requirements. In addition, individuals can attend prearranged runs of the course. Please contact UKAEA for further information.
