UKAEA A World Leader in Decommissioning & Waste Management.

Safety Case Services

Over the past 15 years, UKAEA has operated four UK sites under Nuclear Site Licences. Consequentially, we have developed a process for complying with the Nuclear Site Licence Conditions. As each site has multiple facilities, we have had to manage safety documentation for around 100 facilities – ranging from decommissioning of commercial power reactors through to managing new waste stores and waste treatment facilities.

Our capabilities

Our safety case process meets the changing requirements for safety cases through: addressing the need for engineering- based modern standards safety cases; developing and revising methodologies for consequence and frequency analysis; and introducing methodologies and guidance on topics such as human factors, engineering substantiation and ALARP reviews.

Over the years, the process has been developed and refined so we now supply a number of services:

  • Development of safety case processes,
  • Development of safety case arrangements
  • Development and review of safety case methodologies
  • Preparation of safety case guidance
  • Safety case production management and trouble shooting
  • Provision of advice on safety cases
  • Independent membership of safety committees
  • Radioactive material transport safety case development, assessment and review
  • Radiological protection advice/guidance and training
  • Safety case training
  • Peer review

Additionally, UKAEA already has good experience of other licensees’ processes and has assisted other licensees in reviewing and revising components of their safety case processes.

How you benefit

We can bring valuable, first-hand experience into an organisation – providing an independent view of existing processes, identifying potential improvements and helping to solve existing problems.
