Our capabilities
We offer advice on various engineering issues from front-end engineering (including new facility design) to infrastructure (enabling works and plant and services upgrades). Our engineering substantiation consultancy services include periodic reviews of fitness for purpose, modern standards assessments, and ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) arguments. We also conduct design reviews and ensure that our clients conform to industry standards.
Our highly experienced team of experts offers comprehensive risk assessment and safety case production services. They include decommissioning safety cases, integrated engineering substantiation, independent peer review and baseline and organisational change assessment.
UKAEA has designed a number of fuel and waste inventory record systems including the ATOM (Accountancy and Tracking Of Materials) package – the only commercial off-the-shelf system for processing, moving and reporting nuclear and radioactive materials and sources and which is soon to be compliant with Euratom 2008 regulations.
Our other software supporting packages include work prioritisation, strategic planning, GIS land quality data collection and earned value programme management. Our stakeholder management and consultation processes set the standard for UK best practice, and UKAEA can provide expert guidance on community consultation and BPEO (Best Practicable Environmental Option) studies.
With our outstanding safety record, we work with our clients on safety and loss prevention including: incident investigation and learning; nuclear criticality; radiological prevention; environmental protection and industrial safety.
Key achievements in technical consulting
- Gained 60 Letters of Compliance for intermediate level waste streams from Nirex.
- Involved over 1,400 stakeholders in consultation on site clean-up projects through our Dounreay BPEO public participation programme.
