Programme Management
We offer complete management of nuclear site restoration – from planning and reactor decommissioning to radioactive waste management and environmental remediation strategies.

Our expertise enables us to review and make recommendations on programmes relating to the design, refurbishment and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
In addition, UKAEA can leverage the experience of our partners who operate in the American and European decommissioning markets. And, as a result of our vast experience in nuclear clean-up, we know how to deliver results within tight regulatory controls.
We manage the clean-up of four UK sites – Dounreay, Harwell, Winfrith and Windscale – on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Additionally, we are working on plans for the decommissioning programme for the JET fusion facility at Culham.
Our capabilities
Decommissioning strategy and concept development is a staged approach that includes preparing a strategic study, conducting option studies to come up with the best timing and methodology, and assessing costs, risks and environmental factors.
UKAEA offers programme baseline development and planning through decommissioning and site restoration activities, support functions and environmental and waste management strategies. We track performance targets, manage resources, identify key interfaces and monitor critical path activities during the programme.
By engaging with stakeholders and developing regulatory relationships, we ensure that decommissioning programme delivery meets the agreed schedule and budget.
Key achievements in programme management
- Accelerated UK site restoration programmes by up to 35 years.
- Removed £2 billion worth of liabilities through decommissioning.
- Reduced cost-estimates for remaining clean-up work – predicted to save the UK taxpayer a further £2 billion.
