UKAEA Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary within the UKAEA Group and is the commercial arm providing nuclear decommissioning, waste management and site environmental remediation services under contract in both the UK and overseas. It also manages the pension administration for a number of nuclear industry pension schemes. Although legally registered as UKAEA Ltd, the company will trade and be known within the market as UKAEA.
UKAEA Ltd owns two subsidiary companies – Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) and Research Sites Restoration Ltd (RSRL)*. These subsidiaries are nuclear site licensee companies responsible for Dounreay (DSRL) and Harwell and Winfrith (RSRL) sites. UKAEA Ltd acts in the role of Parent Body Organisation (PBO) under the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority competition model and provides senior management, under secondment, to the two subsidiaries.
UKAEA Ltd’s parent, the UK Atomic Energy Authority, continues to encompass fusion research for the UK, is one of the joint venture partners in the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, provides IT and Telecommunications services to the group and is responsible for corporate governance. It is a Non-Departmental Public Body responsible to the UK Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
* RSRL is currently a shell company. It is expected that the nuclear site licenses for Harwell and Winfrith will be granted in late 2008, thus enabling RSRL to become trading companies. Until then Harwell and Winfrith are divisions of the NDPB.
